Types of Mountain Bikes

For more than 15 years, BikesDirect has been selling top-quality bicycles at an affordable price directly to consumers around the United States. Among of the many types of bicycles that Bikes Direct sells are mountain bikes, which come in an array of sizes, prices, and types.

Although many people may think all mountain bikes fall into a single category, there are actually five different types. The following is a brief overview of each type of mountain bike.

-Cross-country mountain bikes. As the lightest mountain bike type, the cross-country mountain bike is designed for riding long distances on walking-type trails that have few obstacles. Although they are light, cross-country mountain bikes are sturdy enough for some rough terrain.

-Free ride mountain bikes. Free ride mountain bikes are built for just about everything, from jumping to racing. They are built for downhill rides, but they are suitable for going uphill when needed.

-Downhill mountain bikes. Designed specifically for downhill riders, this type of mountain bike is heavier than its counterparts and has larger tires to allow for quick, yet stable downhill rides. Riding uphill is difficult with this type of mountain bike, but it is able to handle large drops.

-Trail mountain bikes. Also called all-mountain bikes, this type works well for a wide range of trails. Trail mountain bikes are slightly heavier than cross-country mountain bikes, but they are a good option for bikers who go through several types of terrain during their rides.

-Dirt jump mountain bikes. Built especially for riding over obstacles and jumps, dirt jump bikes are like a combination of BMX and free ride bikes. Most of the suspension is located in the front of the bike, and the handlebars are larger than normal to promote easy maneuvering.
